New TSU coach looks at Birmingham

Special to the N.E.T. Sports Gazette

Texas Southern University Head Coach Steve Wilson enters his first season with one focus.

“We are not trying to be respectable in this conference.  We are not trying to be in the middle of the pack.  Everything we do is about getting on the road to Birmingham,” says Coach Wilson.

Coach Wilson begins his era with the Tigers with new coaches, new systems and a near majority freshman team.  But the large number of newcomers has Coach Wilson counting his blessings rather than scratching his head.

“We are fast and we are athletic, and I believe we can do something with that.”

Coach Wilson will handle the defensive side of the ball.  He says the defense is his prized possession…the key to winning championships.  TSU Veterans Fredricc Brock (LB) and Stacey Thomas (SS) have Coach Wilson feeling confident about his chances.

“Both of these young men will be dominant on the field.  Brock will cause lots of confusion for offenses…never lining-up in the same place twice; and Thomas runs the field like an All-American, and he’s a vicious hitter.”

These two student-athletes will be center of the TSU Maroon “Mean Streak” Defense…a force that is destined to dominate in the SWAC.

On the offensive side of the ball, a freshmen quarterback will hold the reins.  But Coach Wilson says the offense will be balanced, and the pressure taken off the young and talented football player.

A big, explosive offensive line is the first line of defense for the young quarterback.  William Harris and Herbert Rouse will be the key upfront.  Both players have excellent technique and strength, and should give the quarterback the time he needs to get the job done.

Another part of the pressure valve is in the backfield with Raymond Gilmore.  Gilmore played defense last year, but he came to TSU as an option quarterback.  Coach Wilson says he has homerun speed, and good vision coming out of the backfield.  He’ll have some help in Jason Walker, an explosive running back with great speed and power.  He’s also the nephew of Hershel Walker.

Another offensive weapon is Tight End Delfert Gunter.  He will be the main “go to guy.”  Gunter is an exceptional pass receiver.  Coach Wilson says Gunter is athletic, tough and smart.

Coach Wilson says do not get caught sitting down when the ball is kicked in the direction of Daniel Davis.  “This kid can make things happen every time he touches the ball.  He’s allusive, fast…and he has a knack for finding the end zone.”

There is definitely a New Tiger and Town in Coach Steve Wilson, and he is bringing some exciting football back to the bayou city, and onto the campus of TSU.
